Dr Vece Paes, father of Indian tennis star Leander Paes, wears many hats. The former India hockey player-turned doctor (sports medicine) was on medical duty during the ICC World Twenty20 final here at the Eden Gardens on Sunday.
“I am in Kolkata for the World Cup final, my duty is at the medical centre,” he said.
“There are two different teams for the men’s and women’s matches. I have been assigned the men’s match (between England and West Indies),” he said.
The senior Paes is thrilled to be a part of the final.
“It is exciting to be here, the environment is electric. The spectators are special. There has been a lot of good work done by BCCI and the state association on the pitch and outfield,” mentioned Paes.
The stadium’s renovation has reduced the seating capacity but Paes believes it has made the venue much better.
“We probably had an advantage of 10,000 more spectators. But the venue is now ideal to hold the World Cup final,” said Paes, who was a part of the Indian hockey team which clinched bronze in the 1972 Munich Olympics.
