Chennai: Michael Hussey may have unwittingly blown the lid off the Gurunath Meiyappan saga. In his new memoir, Underneath the Southern Cross (named after legendary Oz team song), the former Australian batsman has revealed that BCCI president N. Srinivasan had handed over the control of Chennai Super Kings to his sonin-law Gurunath who has now been chargesheeted by Mumbai police for alleged involvement in the IPL betting scandal. “Our owner was Indian Cements, headed by Mr Srinivasan. As he was also on the board of the BCCI, he gave control of the team to his son-in-law Mr Gurunath. He ran the team along with Kepler Wessels, who was coach,“ he wrote. Hussey has been a major star with the Chennai franchisee since the inaugural edition in 2008. When the betting scandal broke leading to the arrest of Gurunath, the India Cements-owned Super Kings distanced themselves from their 'Team Principal'. Board of Control for Cricket in India president N. Srinivasan too washed his hands off his 'enthusiastic' sonin-law in a bid to save the Chennai Super Kings, two-time champions of the Indian Premier League, from possible termination. IPL's Rule 11.3, Clause (C), calls for the termination of a franchise in the event 'the Franchisee, any Franchisee Group Company and/or any Owner acts in any way which has a material adverse effect upon the reputation or standing of the League, BCCI/IPL, BCCI, the Franchisee, the Team (or any other team in the League) and/or the game of cricket.' Now that a player of (Australian batsman) Michael Hussey's impeccable reputation has gone on record to confirm that Gurunath was indeed running the team, will the newlyappointed IPL chairman Ranjib Biswal call for a meeting to discuss the future of the Chennai Super Kings It is a litmus test for Biswal who is considered a Srinivasan loyalist after having been handpicked to travel with the Indian team as manager on many occasions.
