New Zealand had to work harder than they might have expected before winning the first Test against Zimbabwe by an innings and 117 runs at

Queens Club in Bulawayo with more than a day to spare.

Zimbabwe began the day at 121/5, still trailing New Zealand by 291.

But an outstanding maiden Test century by Sean Williams, and some dogged defiance from captain Graeme Cremer, ended any thoughts that New Zealand might have entertained of a comfortable march to victory today.

Williams hit 119 off 148 balls, with 21 boundaries before being ninth man out. He shared a 118-run stand with Cremer for the seventh wicket, a record by either side for Tests between the countries.

The win gives New Zealand a four-win, one-draw Test record in Bulawayo and a 10th win in 16 Tests overall.
