With their Indian Premier League campaign all but over, Kings XI Punjab were dealt a heavy blow ahead of their match against Royal Challengers Bangalore as Glenn Maxwell returned home owing to a side strain.
Disappointed at losing one of his key players, coach Sanjay Bangar said, “Maxwell has been one of the top players who we look to deliver. This season he has shown a lot of intent, and the desire to do well. He contributed a lot in the preparation part and was helping the group.
“Losing a player of his calibre in the fag end of the tournament is a very big blow, especially when you come to Bangalore you want players who are capable of hitting big sixes, the major boundary hitters.”
“He would be missed, but an opportunity missed could be an opportunity presented to some other guy like Farhaan Behradien, who is a very, very underrated player, but does a tremendous role as a finisher for the South African team.
“There is somebody who can step up and do the job. We will miss Maxwell’s presence and energy in the field, but have total faith in someone like Farhaan to step up and do the job that Maxwell was doing,” added Bangar.
Though their playoff hopes have been dashed, the coach was satisfied with the team’s performance. “We come in to every game wanting to play our best game. The last six games we have played has gone to the wire and lost by very slim margins, which could have gone either way. I am very happy with the quality of cricket Kings XI Punjab have played in the last six games. The points table doesn’t really reflect the kind of cricket we have played, but such things happen in cricket. We need to come out tomorrow and again repeat the same type of cricket that the Kings XI Punjab would like to play.”
