Mumbai continued to pile up the runs on the second day of the Irani Cup match against Rest of India at Brabourne Stadium here on Monday too, with Suryakumar Yadav becoming the second centurion of the match.

Yadav top-scored with 156 as the Ranji champions posted a mammoth 603 in their first innings.

After sweating it out on the field for more than five sessions (725 minutes) in which they bowled 158.2 overs, RoI saw off a difficult 75 minutes of play, losing Srikar Bharat (16) in the process.

The right-handed Andhra batsman negotiated 35 balls and struck three boundaries but perished while chasing a wide delivery from all-rounder Abhishek Nayar towards the fag end of the day, slashing to Siddesh Lad at point.

Play was extended for about an hour to compensate for just 83 overs bowled on the first day.

Opener Faiz Fazal (18 not out) and Jayant Yadav (1 not out) were left to negotiate the challenging last 15 minutes in which they had to counter lengthening shadows and Shardul Thakur’s short balls as well. RoI were 36/1 in 16 overs at stumps, 567 runs in arrears. In all, 91.2 overs were bowled on Monday.

Earlier, Yadav resumed on 88 not out with skipper Aditya Tare and continued to send the bowlers on a leatherhunt. He reached his 10th first class hundred and surpassed opener Jay Bista’s score of 104 posted on Sunday.

Wicketkeeper batsman Tare perished after making 65 and adding 162 with Yadav for the fourth wicket. Lad joined Yadav at the crease and further consolidated with a partnership of 78 runs.

Yadav played 271 balls sending 24 shots to the fence and one over it. He was looking good for a double ton but a soft dismissal cut short his knock. He misread the flight of the ball and offered a return catch to Jayant. The off-spinner removed Nayar (2) and Dhawal Kulkarni (0) in quick succession to give some joy to his team.

But Lad (66) and Iqbal Abdulla (29) added another 46 for the eighth wicket to take the score well beyond 550. Shardul Thakur (18) ensured Mumbai crossed 600 with some lusty hits but Jayant had Thakur caught at long on by Krishna Das to end with figures of 4/132. Jaydev Unadkat (2/128) and Das (2/152) picked two wickets apiece.

Scores: Mumbai 603 in 158.2 overs (S. Yadav 156, J Bista 104, A. Herwadkar 90; J. Yadav 4/132, J. Unadkat 2/128, K. Das 2/152) vs Rest of India 36/1 in 16 overs (F. Fazal 18 batting)
