Sri Lankan spin legend Muttiah Muralitharan has been roped in as Australia's spin bowling consultant ahead of the three- match Test series against the Island nation.

The 44-year-old, who is the highest wicket-taker in Test cricket with 800 scalps, is expected to continue giving his valuable tips to Australian spinners until the start of the first Test in Pallekele on July 26.

-"Murali's got a lot of experience in Sri Lanka,-" Australia captain Steven Smith was quoted as saying by 'ESPNcricinfo'.

-"He took a truckload of wickets. It's great to have someone like that helping our spinners in this series - to give us that insight. He's been really good around the group so far, and he's enjoying his time with us.-"

This is the second time Muralitharan has joined forces with the Australian team. He had previously worked with Australia as a short-term consultant ahead of their Test series against Pakistan in the UAE two years ago.
