In an attempt to sensitise its vigilance teams, the government has reportedly convened a meeting of its newly-appointed vigilance officers on Friday to discuss ways to set up an effective mechanism to curb corruption. The meeting, to be headed by principal secretary (vigilance) Chetan Sangi, is likely to discuss in detail the role of each vigilance officer of the rank of special or additional secretary to keep an effective tab on the 60-odd government departments.

A source said that the vigilance officers were said to be reluctant to carry out new tasks as they feared that it could spoil their ties with their fellow bureaucrats. “The officers know if they order any inquiry against any officer, the matter will land in court and they will have to attend hearings till the same is disposed of.”

The city recently appointed vigilance officers to keep a tab on the corrupt officers in the city administration. Ever since joint commissioner of police M.K. Meena was appointed as the ACB head by lieutenant-governor Najeeb Jung against the wishes of chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, the AAP government had been making all out efforts to strengthen its vigilance wing.

The administration had already ordered the vigilance officers to handle only vigilance-related complaints and would not be tasked with any other departmental work. It directed that the officers deputed in the vigilance wing should not be given any other work by any department so that they could fully concentrate on their monitoring.

Former director information & publicity F.O. Hashmi, who was also holding the charge of special secretary (health and family welfare), had been tasked to look after the work of vigilance wing of health and family welfare, Directorate of Health Services, all hospitals, drugs control and food safety and ISM&H.

Special commissioner food and supplies S.B. Shashank had been assigned the job of vigilance officer to keep track of transport, information and publicity, labour, employment, R.C.S., U.T.C.S., tourism and DSSSB. Delhi Subordinate Services Selection Board secretary too has been made a vigilance officer to keep tab on revenue, development, agriculture marketing, industries, election, economics and statistics departments.
