Telecom companies meet trai to talk about tariff

Incumbent telecom operators including Airtel and Vodafone on Friday met with the telecom regulator Trai to complain that Jio’s free voice calls offer is allegedly violating tariff order.

Incumbent telecom operators including Airtel and Vodafone on Friday met with the telecom regulator Trai to complain that Jio’s free voice calls offer is allegedly violating tariff order.

Trai chairman R.S. Sharma had called the meeting as some telecom service companies wrote to the regulator alleging that Jio has violated some tariff order. “The Trai chairman listened to us... He is examining the matter and will get back to us, at the earliest,”Vodafone India MD and CEO Sunil Sood said.

During the meeting operators alleged that Jio’s tariff is violating interconnection usage charge (IUC) tariff order and its tariffs are predatory. Some operators alleged that Jio’s tariffs are hurting small operators business.

Reliance Jio is offering free voice calls for lifetime and 4G mobile broadband services free till December 31. “The operators met me today on a letter which they had written on IUC non-compliance, predatory tariff and non-discrimination. We are looking into it,”said Mr Sharma.

He said that regulator has also sought daily reports from operators on congestion at PoIs.
