Replying to a question in Rajya Sabha, MoS (finance) Santosh Kumar Gangwar said about 1.36 crore non-filers with potential tax liability have been identified under NMS.

Total number of taxpayers of income tax in the country for the financial year 2015-16 is 5,24,38,971, he said in a written reply. The Income Tax department has implemented the Non-Filers Monitoring System, which analyses and assimilates all in-house information as well as transactional data received from third parties.

Replying to a separate query, Gangwar said the revenue department has decided to write letters to 2,59,260 tax payers whose appeals were pending as on February 29, 2016 for settling their tax related disputes.
