The Indian arm of German auto major Volkswagen on Thurs-day denied violation of emission norms in the country and said its cars were not equipped with a “defeat device”.
A cheat or defeat device is a software in diesel engines to manipulate emission tests by changing the performance of the vehicles to improve results.
Volkswagen also said that the emission levels prescribed in the United States and Europe differ significantly from the emission limits prescribed in India.
The carmaker told the National Green Tribunal that the ministry of road transport and highways and ARAI have initiated their investigations in the matter and a final report was awaited.
It said no conclusion has yet been arrived at by the Indian authorities regarding violation of environmental norms in the country and any coercive order would be against the principles of natural justice.
Union heavy industries minister Anant Geete, however, insisted that the company does not comply with India’s emission norms and further action will taken after getting a reply from the company.
