The department of telecom (DoT) plans to issue e-KYC norms within a month which would help in activating mobile phone connections in a few minutes.

“The DoT will come up with one reform-oriented measure every mo-nth. We expect to put in place e-KYC guidelines in weeks rather than month,” telecom secretary J.S. Deepak told reporters on sidelines of Qualcomm event.

The government has been working on Aadhaar linked verification of subscribers. As per the proposal, customer having Aad-haar number biometrics like finger print or eyes will be scanned for verification and SIM card will be activated immediately after authentication. The process is also expected to reduce fake connections in India.

Trai had recommended this measure in Febr-uary after taking on board the views of the Solicitor General and the Attorney General.

When operators issue new connections using the Aadhaar card, it would speed up the verification process as everything will be done online.

In order to simplify the electronic verification process through Aadh-aar, regulator Sebi has also allowed mutual fund houses and market intermediaries to verify the credentials of their clients with the Unique Identification Authority of India.
