Nifty ends range-bound session on a flat note

Mumbai: The NSE 50-share Nifty closed flat with a marginal 4.90 points gain amid volatility and weak global cues as investors remained cautious due to geopolitical concerns.

Infra, banks, FMCG and metal stocks helped the market end with positive bias but the selling in realty, energy, pharma, PSU banks, media and auto stocks capped upside.

Overseas, European stocks were trading lower as investors eye the impact of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Jose.

Asian stocks were mixed as investors braced for damage that Hurricane Irma may inflict on Florida. The Nifty opened higher at 9,958.65 and moved in a range of 9,963.60 and 9,913.30 before ending at 9,934.80, a marginal rise of 4.90 points, or 0.05 per cent from its last close.

It saw an intra-day movement of about 50.30 points. On Sectoral front, Nifty infra rose 0.88 per cent, FMCG 0.39 per cent, private banks 0.27 per cent, bank 0.27 per cent and metal 0.18 per cent.

However, realty fell 1.47 per cent followed by PSU bank 1.03 per cent, pharma 1.21 per cent, energy 0.66 per cent, media 0.63 per cent and auto 0.54 per cent.

Index gainers were Larsen, Bharti Airtel, Kotak Bank, HDFC Bank, Tech Mahindra, Wipro, Ultratech Cement, Maruti and Coal India.

While, M&M shares saw decline followed by Dr Reddy, BPCL, Bank Of Baroda, Sun Pharma, NTPC, PowerGrid and Infosys. Broader markets, the Nifty Midcap and Smallcap indices slipped by 0.24 and 0.70 per cent, respectively.

The market breadth, indicating the overall health of the market, was tilted towards the loss. On the NSE, 692 stocks advanced, compared with 1,002 stocks declining, and 62 stocks remaining unchanged.

As many as 131 securities hit their price bands. Turnover in the cash segment fell to Rs 26,292.88 crs from Rs 27,808.09 crore yesterday. A total of 14,055.37 lakh shares changed hands in 98,63,908 trades.

The market capitalisation of listed firms on the NSE stood at Rs 13,220,538.02 crore.
