Supreme Court order to boost India’s image

New Delhi: IT industry body Nasscom on Thursday said that the Supreme Court judgement declaring privacy as fundamental right will boost India’s attractiveness as a safe destination for global sourcing. 

Nasscom president R. Chandrashekhar said the judgement will enhance citizens’ trust in digital services, a prerequisite for widespread digital adoption. Currently, the government under its Digital India initiative is focusing to provide various services to the citizens through digital means to end corruption and for speedier services to the people. 

“This landmark judgement will ensure that protection of citizen’s privacy is a cardinal principle in our growing digital economy. Besides, it will enhance citizens’ trust in digital services, a prerequisite for widespread digital adoption. The ruling also significantly boosts India’s attractiveness as a safe destination for global sourcing,” said Mr Chandrashekhar. 

Data Security Council of India (DSCI), a part of Nasscom, CEO Rama Vedashree said the body has always advocated for a stronger data security regime in the country and this judgement will further reinforce industry efforts and resolve to provide necessary assurance in this regard.

A nine-judge bench headed by Chief Justice J.S. Khehar on Thursday in a historic judgement has ruled that “right to privacy is an intrinsic part of Right to Life and Personal Liberty under Article 21 and entire Part III of the Constitution”.

Nasscom and DSCI asserted that they will continue to work with the government in accelerating the enforcement framework.
