Vocational jobs score over engg, MBA with double-digit growth in salaries

Chennai: The widening demand-supply gap has led to a double-digit growth in salaries of vocational jobs and the trend is likely to continue in the coming years.

The salary growth of vocational skilled talent is higher than that of professional degrees holders from poorly ranked institutions, finds a study by Teamlease Services. During the period 2017-2018, the average salaries for vocational jobs grew by 18 per cent whereas engineering and MBA jobs rose only by 4 per cent and 3 per cent, respectively.

The salaries are higher for visual merchandiser in apparel segment, service technician  in automobile sector, network technician  in BFSI and FinTech, surveyor in construction, gemmologist  in gems & jewellery, quality inspection supervisor  in logistics and interior designer  in retail segments.

For instance, the average salary of a network technician with five-year experience grew from Rs. 38,000 in 2016 to Rs 51,600 per month in 2018, the salary of an engineer with similar years of experience grew from Rs 37,200 to only Rs. 41,500.
