Mumbai: From Saturday, petrol at fuel stations across Maharashtra state will cost Rs 77.45 a litre, that is a hike of Rs 3 a litre. Earlier petrol price in the state was Rs 74.45, according to a report in The Times of India.

The unexpected increase in the essential vehicle fuel comes as a result of an increase in Value Added Tax on petrol effected by the Devendra Fadnavis government.

The report cited a statement from Petrol Dealers Association that confirmed the hike in petrol prices. PDA also said there was no change in VAT on diesel consequently there will not be any change in diesel prices.

VAT on diesel is 21 per cent plus Rs 2 for rest of the state and 24 per cent plus Rs 2 for Mumbai metropolitan region that comprises most of the areas covered under MMRDA.

"The tax of 26 per cent plus Rs 6 has been restructured by increasing it to 26 per cent plus Rs 9," TOI quoted gazette notification dated April 21 as saying.

A dealer said VAT will be 26 per cent plus Rs 9 per litre for Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane city, whereas 25 per cent plus Rs 9 per litre is for rest of Maharashtra.
