New Delhi: Amidst escalating concerns over job cuts in the IT industry and talks of India becoming a USD 1 trillion digital economy by 2022, information technology minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has called for a meeting with the top honchos of IT and electronic companies this coming Friday.

The meeting will address the issue of IT sector layoffs and ever-slowing growth in the sector due to massive changes in technology, automation and a growing attitude of protectionism in developed markets. The rigid system of appraisal which has recently been in the news for numerous dismissals will also be discussed in the meeting.

According to a report in Business Standard, the government is keen on quickly and steadily achieving its aim of a USD 1 trillion digital economy by 2022 through its Digital India plan. According to a ministry official, the government has struck up various deal with the industry in designing new services and platforms like MyGov, digital locker e-Sign, cloud services, the government e-marketplace, e-national agricultural market and the like.

In order to achieve this dream, the role of both the telecom and IT ministries is crucial. Telecom Minister Manoj Sinha is also scheduled to meet telcom promoters on June 22 to discuss the financial heat the telecom sector is facing.
