A day after the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) came out with consultation paper on zero rating plans, Facebook said on Thursday that its Free Basics is helping people and it should not be halted or limited.

“There is no doubt that Free Basics is already helping people. Several thousands of people have applied for jobs as a result of the program. We also know that healthcare information has been accessed millions of times on Free Basics,” said Kevin Martin, vice-president (mobile and global access policy), Facebook.

Mr Martin said that Facebook hopes those involved in this discussion “consider the broader consequences of halting or limiting programs that help people connect and improve their lives.”

Earlier called ‘Internet.Org’, Facebook had launched the ‘Free Basics’ in India with RCom to offer free access to certain apps and websites.
