Mumbai: With Rakhi marking the beginning of year-long festivities, Paytm seems to have tapped into the celebratory mood, with its 'Paytm Postcards', that allows people to send ‘shagun’ or gift money to dear ones in a matter of seconds!

The Alibaba backed company rolled out these gift cards on Monday, in tune with the Rakshabandhan celebrations all over the country.

“Given that millions living away from family and friends use our instant money transfer facility to send money to their loved ones during festivals, we wanted to enhance this experience by enabling them to add a personal touch to their gift money”, said Paytm in a blogpost.

Similar to the experience of receiving the tiny, decorated envelops of ‘shagun’, ‘Paytm Postcards’ can also be decorated in various designs and sent as small tokens of the love we have for our close ones.

This digital version of ‘shagun’ can be sent in the following way:

While sending an envelope of gift money may cost you time, labour and money, ‘Paytm Postcards’ can be sent without any cost. It also comes with a series of themes like Classic, Rakhi, Birthday, Best Wishes, Thank You and Lucky You.

Indian instant messaging platform Hike had in June, launched the concept of ‘Blue Packets’, similar to WeChat’s ‘Red Packets’, that allows people to send gift money to contacts.

Digital payments have seen a surge in India since, especially since demonetisation in 2016. According to reports, digital payments providers like Paytm, have rapidly increased their share in the market. Predictions suggest, its shares will jump nearly 10 times to USD 500 billion by 2020.
