Mumbai: BMW, the second biggest German luxury car maker, on Thursday launched the fourth generation all-new BMW X5 SUV with a starting price of Rs 72.90 lakh to take on compatriot rival and market leader Mercedes Benz, among others.

The new BMW X5 SUV, which is one of the 10 models locally assembled at the company's factory in Chennai, is available with petrol and diesel engine options - the former comes only in the M Sport variant, while the latter will be offered in Sport and xLine trims.

While the X5 Sport diesel variant costs Rs 72.90 lakh, the X5 xLine diesel and X5 M Sport petrol variants are tagged at Rs 82.40 lakh at pan India showroom.

Loaded with features, the new BMW X5 is slightly longer and wider than the outgoing model thanks to the new platform which it shares with the BMW 5 Series and BMW 7 Series sedans.

The BMW X5 rivals the Volvo XC90, the Land Rover Discovery, Range Rover Velar, Audi Q7, and the Mercedes GLE. This is the third (after BMW 530i M sport and BMW Z4) of the 12 launches announced earlier by BMW for 2019.

"The BMW X5 has been the best-selling car in the SUV segment since 1990 and has become one of our most successful models," Hans-Christian Baertels, President at BMW Group India, said.

Combining an elegant and strong design with supreme on/off-road ability, the all-new BMW X5 has an even greater blend of premium luxury performance, tech and comfort, he boasted.
