Airtel counters Jio with 3-month unlimited data

India’s largest telecom operators Bharti Airtel on Friday announced unlimited 4G data for three months for the pre-paid customers with a single recharge of Rs 1,495.

India’s largest telecom operators Bharti Airtel on Friday announced unlimited 4G data for three months for the pre-paid customers with a single recharge of Rs 1,495. The move is seen by experts as Airtel move to counter Reliance Jio.

The pack is available for Rs 1,495 for existing users and Rs 1,494 for new users, and effectively brings down 4G data rates to Rs 50 per GB. The data pack will work on 4G handsets.

“Customers with 4G handsets generally consume large amounts of data and this proposition is specifically aimed at them. With this pack these customers can stay online round the clock without having to worry about exhausting their data limits or going for frequent recharges,” said Ajai Puri, director - operations (India & South Asia), Bharti Airtel.

The pack is currently available in Delhi and will be launched across other circles over the next few days, said Airtel.

The company said “fair usage policy will be applicable on the data pack”, which means consumers can avail up to 30 GB of high-speed data over 90 days and once this data limit is exhausted, the Internet will continue but on 2G speeds.

Meanwhile, Idea on Friday released a statement that said it has agreed to provide 230 per cent additional inter-connection capacity to help users of Reliance Jio complete calls, a move the Mukesh Ambani-led firm termed as “grossly inadequate” displaying lack of intent to resolve the critical issue.

The statement read it will “further enhance capacity in both access and long-distance inter-connection, by providing over 230 per cent additional capacity, allowing for two-way calling between the networks.

“With this huge capacity expansion, over 2,100 ports will now be available for traffic between Idea and Jio, allowing sufficient buffer for future,”

In regards to the spectrum auction, Reliance Communication and Aircel, which announced their merger about a week ago, will bid separately in the auction as none of the applicant pulled out from the mega-spectrum race according to the information released by the Department of Telecom.
