Priyanshu Chatterjee’s debut in the 2001 musical Tum Bin gave him a sound platform in the industry. He was instantly touted as the latest heart-throb, but he failed to sustain the momentum. He did a few more films after that and then vanished from the scene altogether. The actor will now be seen on the big screen in Hate Story 3, 14 years after his debut film. In a candid chat, Priyanshu talks about what caused his prolonged absence from the silver screen and the struggles he had to go through to get work post his debut.

How did you bag the cameo in Hate Story 3 T-Series called me and said that the film is happening and that they wanted me for the role. I found it interesting and agreed to do it. As it turns out, the makers wrote this role keeping me in mind.

Were you disappointed with your career post Tum Bin I started with Tum Bin, but later I did two more films under the same banner — Aapko Pehle Bhi Kahin Dekha Hai and Julie. As a newcomer, my work was appreciated and people accepted me as an actor. It took me a while to figure out what kind of work I needed to do. I worked with directors like Aparna Sen and Rituparno Ghosh. I wanted to do interesting roles.

As someone without a background in films, how difficult was it for you to make your mark in the industry There was a lot of struggle. People have different perceptions about you and sometimes looks also can limit you as an actor. I have always been open towards character roles. But I guess only now the industry is becoming more experimental.

Do you feel star kids are ruling the industry now Absolutely! They have taken the industry to a higher level. Ranbir Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt — they are all talented. Their work is making the industry better.
