A popular face on television and ads, Anuj Sachdeva is the latest actor to have jumped the fence and moved to the other side — Bollywood. Anuj is gearing up for his big debut — as lead— in the soon-to-release Love Shagun. We caught up with the actor days before the release. Excerpts from and interview:

What made you sign Love Shagun as your debut in Bollywood Anuj: I always had a lover boy image thanks to my TV commercials. I wanted to break that image. I read the script and found out that my character, JD, is very appealing. I was appreciated in Hawaa Hawaai, but this role will break the ice.

What is your character like in the film My character believes in astrology. He is nerdy but not stupid. I feel JD is a modern day Amol Palekar. He inspires my character. I had tried to mould him according to today’s youth. He has adapted to the modern world but is still rooted in his family and culture.

As a television actor making a jump, would you say there’s baggage you had to shed Not at all. I won’t call it ‘baggage’. I am an ad/TV guy but people will see a different Anuj (on the big screen). I win the battle if people remember my character JD because I feel that the character should be promoted and not the actor.

How was it working with your co-star Nidhi Subbaiah I didn’t know her much in the beginning. I did my workshop and met her directly in Goa at the shoot. We used to give suggestions and request each other to lift up the scenes.

What was more difficult for you —TV or B’wood In TV, it is easy. If you goof up in one episode, you can perform better in the next one. But films are tough to shoot. Movies are qualitative. Two and half hours isn’t easy to pull off. It is about emotions and expressions.

What are your other projects after Love Shagun There are a couple of big films offered to me. I recently met Anubhav Sinha for Tum Bin 2 and Balaji too. But I am focussed on promoting Love Shagun as of now.
