Film festival comes to an end

The weeklong maha-movie diet came to an end as the curtain fell on Jio MAMI 18th Mumbai Film Festival with Star on October 27. A closing ceremony took place at Bal Gandharva Rangmandir, Bandra where some of the biggest names from the Indian film industry walked the red carpet to celebrate the end of the film festival.

This year, the festival had its spotlight on Turkey and featured a selection of 10 of the best Turkish films — Album, My Mother’s Wound, Bride, Snow Pirates, Winter Sleep, Ember, Blue Bicycle, Dust, Whisper If I Forget and 8 Seconds.

Celebrated Turkish filmmaker Reha Erdem (Kosmos) was part of the jury. Film critic and president of FIPRESCI (International Federation of Film Critics) and curator of the Turkish films, Alin Tasciyan, was also present at the festival along with Turkish stars like Hazal Kaya, Sarp Levendoglu and Kaan Tasaner.

On the closing day, the awards were announced. While some were expected, few came as a surprise.

David Chou’s Diamond Island won The Golden Gateway Award, while the silver went to Ralitza Petrova’s Godless. The jury grand prize went to Everything Else by Natalia Almada and a special mention political commitment of the film went to When Two Worlds Collide.

Indians films also fared well at the festival. The Young Critics Choice Award went to Cinema Travellers by Shirley Abraham and Amit Madhesiya. Oxfam Award for Best Film on Gender Equality went to Lipstick Under my Burkha by Alankrita Shrivastava. Konkona Sen Sharma won the best Indian filmmaker in 2016 award for her debut A Death in the Gunj.
