Sharman Joshi is all set to launch his second play under his banner Sharman Joshi Productions. The play, which is titled Main Aur Tum, is an adaptation of Bernad Slade’s play Same Time Next Year. The actor says that he was only seven when he first watched the play. “My father, uncle and aunt were in it. I wanted to do the play a few years ago, but my father said I was too young for the part. But now, I am really excited that I am finally being able to do it,” Sharman says. He plays a chartered accountant in the play who gets involved in an extra-marital affair. “But my character is lovable. The audiences will love the couple as well,” he adds.
The actor, who has been juggling the stage and films for a while now, finds theatre a “soothing” experience. “It is like a holiday. My approach towards both mediums is the same,” he says. He does add that he prefers theatre to films. “As an actor, theatre helps me grow. In films, you have one Friday to prove yourself. The audiences are much larger. I’ve been doing commercial cinema, where the stakes are high. It is very exciting. And of course, in films you have a lot of technical support. Both mediums are exciting for me, but I prefer theatre,” Sharman says. He feels that film actors doing more plays certainly helps popularise the stage as a medium. “Hindi theatre has a limited audience, as compared to Marathi or Gujarati theatre. It is good that actors like Anupam Kher and Paresh Rawal sir are doing semi-commercialised theatre.”
Main Aur Tum will be staged on May 28 at the Tata Theatre NCPA, 7 pm onwards.
