Comfortable in the comedy space

Varun Sharma has had an enviable career graph.

Varun Sharma has had an enviable career graph. He debuted with Fukrey and then went on to work with big production houses (Dolly ki Doli and Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon) before sharing the screen space with the King Khan, SRK. The young actor talks about his golden stroke in B-town, fan boy moments with Shah Rukh Khan and being much too happy in the comedy space. Excerpts:

How did you bag Dilwale I was shooting for Kis Kisko Pyaar Karun in Rajasthan when I got a call from Rohit sir’s office. Rohit sir had seen my performance in Fukrey and later my ad with Shah Rukh sir — both of which he really liked. In fact, he was the one to present me my first award. After the call, I met the writers of Dilwale and felt that the role was amazing. I am very fortunate to share screen space with Bollywood superstars.

How was your first day on the sets with Shah Rukh Khan I was very nervous. I told Varun (Dhawan) that if my first hour with SRK goes well, then I would be fine. Else I will be scr**d. But after my shot, Shah Rukh sir made me comfortable.

Why are you not seen promoting Dilwale I have been dubbing for the film. You’ll see me now onwards.

Is it a conscious effort on your side to sign multi-starrers It’s the dream of every guy who comes from a non-film background to do big films. I am fortunate to debut with a film like Fukrey. Working with Arbaaz Khan productions in Dolly Ki Doli is also a big deal and then I got a chance to share screen space with the nation’s biggest comedian Kapil Sharma. I don’t think I should get disappointed for not doing solo films.

Do you fear being typecast in comedy genre Quite contrary to my screen image, I have always done serious roles in my theatre days. When I joined films, everyone told me that I will be typecast as a comedian, but I am comfortable in the comedy space. That doesn’t mean I don’t want to explore. I need to show my range as an actor.

Have you ever thought of being compared with Varun Dhawan as a newbie (Laughs) I have never thought of this kind of comparison with Varun. Today he is my closest friend. He is very hardworking and deserves to be in the place that he is right now.

How does your mother react on seeing you on screen with big stars She always gets excited. After my 12th standard, I told her that I want to act. She has been supportive since then. She cried and hugged me when she saw me at the trailer launch of Dilwale. Till date, she feeds me yummy aloo paranthas every morning.
