The music company intend to have a multi-dimensional growth through this move.

This seems to be the first step towards expanding beyond music ahead of taking itself public.

Music streaming company Spotify launched a feature that will allow its listeners to see stories, read news and other content through photos, videos and text, the company said on Thursday, January 18. This seems to be the first step towards expanding beyond music ahead of taking itself public.

The feature, called 'Spotlight', will have content from various sources like BuzzFeed News, Cheddar and Crooked Media, among others. The company announced the same  in a blog post on Thursday.

Spotlight’s content will include multiple things like news, pop culture, sports and politics, and will be available only through a play list, said Spotify, which has  approximately 70 million subscribers.

Spotify has also filed confidentially with US regulators for an initial public offering (IPO) and is targeting a direct listing in the first half of 2018.
