Kolkata/New Delhi/Amravati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday hailed PV Sindhu for winning gold at the BWF World Championship, saying her dedication is inspiring.

She became the first Indian to clinch world badminton championship gold with a win over Nozomi Okuhara of Japan.

"The stupendously talented @Pvsindhu1 makes India proud again! Congratulations to her for winning the Gold at the BWF World Championships," the prime minister tweeted.

The passion and dedication with which she's pursued badminton is inspiring, he said.

"PV Sindhu's success will inspire generations of players," he said.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday congratulated shuttler PV Sindhu for becoming the first Indian to win the BWF World Championships.

Banerjee said Sindhu's feat will make every Indian proud.

"Congratulations to @Pvsindhu1 on becoming the first Indian to win the #BWFWorldChampionships. You make every Indian proud. Keep winning," Banerjee tweeted.

Sindhu on Sunday became the first Indian to win badminton World Championships gold by beating familiar rival Nozomi Okuhara of Japan in a lop-sided final in Basel in Switzerland on Sunday.

The Indian won 21-7, 21-7 in the summit clash that lasted just 38 minutes.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy hailed the 'historic victory' of shuttler P V Sindhu in the BWF World Championships on Sunday.

"Congratulations, Sindhu, on becoming the first Indian to win the gold medal at the BWF World Championships.

(You) dominated right from the start and finished like a true champion," the Chief Minister said in a congratulatory message.

Opposition leader N Chandrababu Naidu also congratulated Sindhu on the victory and said she enhanced India's glory on the world stage once again through extraordinary talent and excellent on-field performance.

"It is a matter of pride for all Telugus that Sindhu became the first Indian to win gold at the World Championships. I wish she scales new heights and achieves more laurels in future," Naidu said in a statement.

President Ram Nath Kovind on Sunday congratulated PV Sindhu on becoming the first Indian to win a gold in badminton World Championships, saying it was a proud moment for the country.

Sindhu hammered Japan's Nozomi Okuhara 21-7 21-7 in a one-sided summit clash to win her maiden World Championships title in her third straight final.

"Congratulations @Pvsindhu1 for winning the BWF World Championship. This is a proud moment for the entire country. Your magic on the court, hardwork and perseverance enthralls and inspires millions," the President tweeted.

"Best wishes World Champion for all your future battles," he wrote.
