Mumbai: Sarfraz Ahmed's elevation as the new captain of Pakistan’s ODI team has been keenly followed by his uncle Mehboob Hasan in India.

The 30-year-old Sarfraz, who was already the captain of the T20 side on Thursday, was named as the replacement for Azhar Ali, who relinquished the ODI captaincy following his poor performance on the Australia tour.

"It’s great news and we are all very excited here", the 52-year-old uncle said, who lives in Etawah, Uttar Pradesh. "He is the son of my sister (Akila Banu) and why would we be not happy?”

"Sarfraz became the father of a baby boy (Abdulla) just 10 days ago and the newborn baby has proved lucky for him".

Mehboob was in Pakistan in 2015 to attend Sarfraz's wedding.
