The accused has been identified as Mohammad Sarik Sanawar Quraishi and he has been booked under various sections of the IPC for threatening the 21-year-old complainant, a resident of Nagpada. Quraishi was produced in court on Monday and has been remanded to police custody till April 1.
According to the police sources, the accused works as a welder in the area where the complainant lives, in Bapti road of Nagpada. Around eight months ago Quraishi befriended the complainant and exchanged mobile numbers.
A few months ago the girl’s family fixed her wedding with a man from Malvani area of Malad. The couple was engaged and the wedding was scheduled to take place in a few months. The complainant then informed Quraishi about her marriage and asked him not to call her anymore. The accused, however, asked her to elope with him. On being refused, Quraishi began to threaten the woman, saying he would throw acid on her face. The complainant also said that he had also threatened to defame in her, said sources in the police.
Scared of the threat, the complainant informed her family about the incident and then approached the Nagpada police. The women police of Nagpada has booked a case against Quraishi under IPC sections 354 D (stalking) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC. When Quraishi came to know that a complaint has been registered against him, he tried to flee but was arrested from the Kamathipura area of Nagpada.
