Woman knifed to death by ex-lover

The Govandi police has arrested the former boyfriend of a 26-year-old girl after he allegedly brutally killed her with his butcher’s knife on Sunday night. The accused has told the police that he killed his girlfriend because she had threatened to destroy his life with the help of her new boyfriend, a tantrik, if he did not end their relationship.

The deceased, Noor Bano Rahat Ali Qureshi, called both her boyfriends to Chemur Dattaram Patil Garden in Chembur east at around 4 pm on Sunday. She had told her first boyfriend, Yasin Jaffar Shaikh (28), a butcher who worked in an abattoir, to end their relationship as she was having an affair with a tantrik.

When Shaikh saw his girlfriend with her new boyfriend in the garden, he allegedly slit her throat with his work cleaver. Uttam Kolekar, senior police inspector, Govandi police station, said, “According to eyewitnesses, a verbal fight took place between the pair, which escalated into violence. Mr Shaikh, who was carrying his work cleaver, attacked Ms Qureshi. He made two deep cuts in her neck and one near her ear.”

Raghvendra Londhe, API of Govandi police station, said, “The woman was rushed to Sion Hospital. Though she was admitted to the ICU, she succumbed to her injuries by 9 pm on Sunday. When we were taking her to the hospital, she told us who tried to kill her. Later on Sunday, Mr Shaikh, who was absconding, was nabbed at around 11 pm from the wedding of his friend that he was attending near Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road. We arrested him on charges ofmurder.”

Qureshi had got married in 2002 and had four sons from her first marriage. In 2014, she and her family started living in a rented place owned by Shaikh. She started dating Shaikh, who was married, in 2015, and eventually left her husband for him. Two months ago, she got into an affair with the tantrik.
