A 32-year-old woman committed suicide in the presence of her one-and-a-half-year-old son in Agripada on Saturday after which her husband and mother-in-law have been booked for abetting her suicide for allegedly physically and mentally torturing her. The husband has been arrested and remanded to police custody.
According to the Agripada police, the incident occurred around 9.30 pm in Ambika chawl on KK Road in Agripada area of Central Mumbai. The husband and mother-in-law of the deceased, Maria Pankaj Parmar, were not at home when she carried out the extreme step.
Maria had met Pankaj at a Xerox shop in Cuffe Parade where she used to work. They fell in love and got married. But after marriage, Pankaj, who works as a contractual labourer with the BMC, started consuming alcohol and allegedly tortured her physically and mentally.
Her mother-in-law made her take up a job soon after she gave birth to a son and harassed her to carry out household work as well. She took the extreme step due to the harassment, said Maria’s 50-year-old mother in her police statement based on which an FIR under Section 306 (abetment to suicide) was registered on Saturday.
Her mother, Jethi Girish Parmar, is also booked in the case. Since she is a 62-year-old, the police are not rushing for arrest.
Maria’s husband has been remanded to police custody till Wednesday.
