In a shocking incident, a woman allegedly murdered her mother-in-law by first strangling her and then poisoning her, and eventually committed suicide by consuming the same poison. The incident came to light after the son of the accused woman found her and his grandmother lying motionless at home. The Shivaji Park police, under whose jurisdiction the incident took place, have registered an accidental death report in the matter.

Usha Kangutkar (70) and her daughter-in-law Akshata (32) lived in Jay Hanuman co-operative society in the Shivaji Park area along with Akshata’s husband Lakshmikant and son Rajdutt (14). The police confirmed that Usha and Akshata shared a stormy relationship. On Thursday morning, following an argument that came to blows, Akshata apparently raised her hand on Usha, causing the latter to retaliate. But since Usha couldn’t hit back due to her old age, Akshata choked her with her hands until she fainted. Akshata did stop her violent streak there and force-fed poison to her mother-in-law. Investigating officers said that after committing the crime, the accused realised the gravity of her actions and consumed the same poison to end her life.

Rajdutt then returned home from school in the evening to find both the women lying still at home. He called the neighbours, who rushed the duo to Sion hospital, where they were declared dead on arrival.
