The Vinobha Bhave Nagar police on Friday has arrested a man for the murder of a woman, reportedly his lover. Officials said the accused was in love with the victim and he killed her following a petty fight.

The arrested accused has been identified as Irfan alias Samir Mohammed Warsi (25) and the victim has been identified as Rakhi Kiran Mangwana (24).

According to sources, Rakhi and Irfan were in love with each other and wanted to get married. However, Irfan who was already married had been unable to get a divorce from his wife. “He had been married for the past two years, but nearly a year ago, his wife left home taking their child with her, once she learnt about his affair with Rakhi,” said a police officer, who did not wish to be named.

While Rakhi was unemployed, Irfan worked as a labourer in a leather factory. Sources said that recently, Irfan’s wife had started calling him again and had expressed a desire to return home.

“This had lead to petty fights between Rakhi and Irfan. He had also asked her to stop visiting him at the factory as he suspected someone was informing his wife about their meetings,” said the officer.

On the day of the incident, Rakhi allegedly visited him at the factory during lunch hour. “He was angry that she had visited him despite his apprehensions. They started having a heated argument which escalated and Irfan allegedly picked up one of the scissors used in the factory and stabbed her on the head,” the officer further said.

Irfan himself rushed Rakhi to the hospital, who had by then started bleeding profusely. “He told the doctors that she had hit her head after a fall, but after examining the injuries, the doctors recognised the blade marks and informed us,” said the police official. “We then questioned him and he told us what had ensued between them.

The arrested accused has been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and remanded to police custody.
