Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi has threatened to take tough action against feuding party leaders in the city. “I will not hesitate to take disciplinary action if I get angry,” he asserted at a party gathering on Friday.

The Congress leader, who is just back from his recent European sojourn and visiting Mumbai after nearly two years, vowed to bring discipline into the Mumbai party unit, which has been riddled with factionalism and intra-party rivalry.

“Congress is a complicated party, with so many disputes and rivalries. But you have to leave them behind and work towards strengthening the party by having an internal dialogue. My job is to ensure harmony in the party, but I will not hesitate to take action if I lose my temper,” he said after inaugurating the Murlibhai Deora Hall at the Mumbai Congress office at Azad Maidan.

Taking a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said, “If you want to go fast, you go alone. But if you intend to stay long, you have to take all the people along with you.”

Rahul’s advice came close on the backdrop of verbal abuses and slogan-shouting by rival factions at a party meeting held a couple of days ago to discuss his visit. In addition to this, the party high command has also sought an explanation from Mumbai Congress chief Sanjay Nirupam over two articles in a party journal criticising Jawaharlal Nehru and terming Sonia Gandhi’s father a “fascist soldier”.
