The last day of the poll campaign for the Kalyan-Dombivali municipal elections turned out to be a sparring ground for chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray with acrimonious exchanges taking place between the two.

Speaking out against the police action on some Sena workers, Mr Thackeray threatened to withdraw from the government if externment notices are served to his party men.

“If you give externment notices to Shiv Sainiks then I will withdraw support to the government. It is happening because you (BJP) can see defeat. We will not remain quiet if the home department is used against us because you fear defeat. What is the election commissioner doing about it (BJP) flouting the code of conduct ” Mr Thackeray asked.

Sena minister Eknath Shinde also offered resignation at one of the rallies, which Uddhav turned down. Uddhav said he would rather withdraw support to the government than accepting the resignation of an individual. He even compared the political situation in Kalyan and Dombivali to the emergency period during late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s regime. “Is this unannounced emergency The people did not spare even Indira Gandhi for the emergency, then what are you ” he asked BJP.

On the other hand, CM Fadnavis said he would complain to the election commission against Sena terror. “I am going to complain to the election commission about the Sena’s terror. Aamhi hathat bangdya ghatalya nahit (We will not remain silent),” he stated.

He alleged that the Sena did not do any work in the Kalyan Dombivali civic body and held the party responsible for not having basic facilities in the suburban cities. The chief minister even took credit for Sena’s 18 MPs who were elected in last years’s Lok Sabha polls. “The 18 MPs were elected because of Narendra Modiji,” he said.

The BJP and Sena broke its alliance and decided to contest separately for the 122 seats of the civic body. The polling will take place on November 1 and the results will be out the next day.
