A 19-year-old tribal girl allegedly committed suicide in Virar by consuming a poisonous chemical over an inter-caste love affair.

A 19-year-old tribal girl allegedly committed suicide in Virar by consuming a poisonous chemical over an inter-caste love affair. They police has registered a case against the parents and brother of her boyfriend in connection with the incident and further investigation is on.

According to sources, the girl was upset as the parents of her boyfriend had frequently threatened to kill her.

According to police sources, Urmila Koti, the deceased lived in Chandip area of Virar. After consuming a poisonous chemical in her house on Thursday night, she was rushed to a hospital by her family. However, she died during treatment.

After Urmila’s death, her brother Bhushan Koti approached the Virar police station. In his police statement he said Urmila was in a relationship with Prasad Patil, a local unemployed youth around 20 years old. But Patil’s family was against the relationship and they had threatened Urmila many times, as they did not want to welcome an Adivasi into their family, he said.

In his statement, Koti said Patil’s parents had abused Urmila and threatened to kill her many times. She killed herself after becoming frustrated due to the threats, he said.

Following the complaint, the police registered a case of abetment to suicide against Budhaji, Nayna and Jayesh Patil, the father, mother and brother respectively of Prasad Patil.

Talking to the The Asian Age, Koti alleged that the police is going soft on the Patils. No arrest was made in the case till Friday evening. Urmila had passed class 11 last year and was learning beautician skills and typing, the police said.
