Teachers to receive English, Math training

In a bid to achieve the Central government diktat of improving learning abilities of school children by 10 per cent in the academic year 2016-17, the school education department will conduct special training in English and Math subjects for class I to V teachers. Officials said the decision was also taken as most children in the state were found lagging in these subjects as teachers themselves were not properly trained in them.

According to a circular issued on May 2 by the school education department to all principals, the school education ministry had started the

Pragat Shaikshanik Maharashtra programme last year with a view to enhancing learning abilities of students across the state. Under this programme, students were to be given specialised training in English and Maths. “As most students lag behind in these two subjects, it was deemed necessary to provide them improved training in them. However, it was also found that teachers too needed help in improving their skills in these subjects, hence the training programme is being organised for them,” said an official.

The official added that the Central government had issued instructions to school education ministries of all states to improve standard of education by at least 10 per cent in the academic year

2016-17 and as training teachers was part of the instructions, the training programme for Class I to V teachers would be organised by the department. Prashant Redij, spokesperson for the Mumbai wing of Maharashtra State School Principals’ Association, welcomed the move but said that teachers should be compensated for undertaking the training. “The training will not only help teachers improve their own skills but also enable them to imbibe newer teaching techniques.
