Barely nine days ahead of the fresh state budget to be presented in the legislature, finance minister Sudhir Mungantiwar on Wednesday submitted supplementary demands of Rs 4,581 crore in the Assembly. This was the third such demand made by him in the current financial year, taking the total sum to Rs 35,000 crore when the budget presented was of Rs 54,000 crore.

Earlier, the finance minister had submitted supplementary demands of Rs 14,793 crore in July 2015 and Rs 16,094 crore in December 2015.

In the supplementary demands presented on Wednesday, the highest provision of Rs 2,818 crore has been made for the industries department. The move has come after the state grabbed investment of Rs 8 lakh crore during the Make in India event. It has given Rs 2,775 crore for subsidy to agriculture pumps and power looms. The government has also given Rs 194 crore for mid-day meal scheme for school children and Rs 15 crore for Manodhairya scheme meant for women and child victims in untoward incidents. In an effort to overcome the drought situation in the state and help farmers, the state has sanctioned Rs 16 crore for the kin of farmers who have committed suicide. It has sanctioned Rs15.89 crore in the supplementary demands to farmers hit by natural calamities, Rs 50 crore for farm ponds. Marathwada region is severely hit by drought and has witnessed 224 farmers’ suicides in the last three months.

The state has set aside Rs 28 crore for the newly-proposed policy on un-conventional energy. The state’s emphasis is on generating clean and green energy from solar, wind and co-generation. It has also encouraged solar power generation at small scale in housing societies, by installing street lamps.

Keeping its promise to provide housing for the police force, the state has sanctioned Rs 112 crore.

The issue of police housing was long pending. It has also given Rs 14.54 crore for remand homes and Rs 18 crore for a cyber crime laboratory.
