A short circuit in the examination section of University of Mumbai on Thursday morning brought work to a standstill till the problem was resolved by 2.15 pm. Though a major incident was averted, employees said there was no system to alert everyone in case of a major disaster. University officials said that the cause of the short circuit would be investigated but it could have happened due to wear and tear and excess load.
According to an employee of the examination section, the incident occurred around noon when sparks were seen emanating from the main electricity board box on the ground floor. “A huge ruckus took place and everyone on the ground floor was asked to vacate the building immediately,” said the employee requesting anonymity.
Confirming the short circuit, an MU spokesperson said that as soon as the sparks were detected the security personnel of the university swung into action and switched off the power in the entire building and doused the flames that had erupted due to the short circuit.
