The internal roads at three dumping grounds in the city – Deonar, Mulund and Kanjurmarg – will still take a year to complete. The roads are expected to be built before the monsoon next year at the proposed cost of Rs 28 crore.

In the backdrop of frequent fire incidents at dumping grounds, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has planned to build internal roads to facilitate the movement of fire engines.

According to civic officials, the fires at the Deonar dumping ground threaten the lives of those living in surrounding areas. To control these fires, roads are needed for the movement of fire engines. “The absence of internal roads was a major reasons for the spread of the fire at Deonar dumping ground, which kept on raging for several days early this year. Due to this, fire engines were not able to reach the fire spots, which caused lot of difficulties in carrying out fire control operations. Hence, it was decided to build roads at the dumping grounds,” said a senior civic official.

The contract for building the roads has been allotted to M/s ME Infra Projects, which has quoted 12.5 per cent below the base rate. The defect liability period for these roads along with construction of flexible pavements is two years. The contract period is eight months excluding the monsoon.

In addition to this, the BMC has also decided to spray herbal deodorant worth Rs 1.15 crore at the Deonar ground five times a day for a period of one year to suppress foul odours.
