The police suspects foul play in the case of a 26-year-old woman who fell to her death from the 19th floor of Maker Towers in Cuffe Parade in south Mumbai.
The incident occurred around 1.30 am on Saturday. The police is investigating four cooks, the domestic help and the owner of the house, who had not approached the police to inform it about the incident.
The deceased, Shamita Tambe, had been employed for six moths as a caretaker by Ramesh Bhojwani (65), a differently abled man. On Friday, Bhojwani, hosted his daughters and 20 other relatives for his birthday. The incident took place after the party. Police officials had recorded statements of a few party attendees, four cooks, security guards of the building and Tambe’s husband.
Sources from the police said it took them more than four hours to identify the deceased because Bhojwani and other servants kept mum about the incident till they were interrogated about it.
One of the police officials said, “We received a call from a building security guard regarding the incident around 8. 30 am. We reached the spot and till noon no one was coming forward to identify the woman. We checked the CCTV footage of the building and identified the house she worked at. However, the owner pretended like he was unaware of the incident.”
According to one the cook’s statement, Tambe fell off the window of the house after she got drunk. She was going through a lot of tension and would drink a lot to deal with it, said the cook.
On the other hand, Tambe’s husband said that his wife, a mother of two children, could not commit suicide. A source from the police said, “The husband said that the couple did not share a healthy relationship. They would quarrel a lot and Tambe would not return to their house for several days but she always made adjustments for the sake of her children.”
Senior police officials said, “The postmortem report stated that she was not drunk. Her husband also said she does not drink. We have sent some of her tissue samples for FSL and are expecting the result soon.”
