Overspeeding youth runs over elderly NRI in Borivali

A 74-year-old died while a 19-year-old was injured in an accident on Gorai Road, late on Sunday.

According to the Borivali police, the youth, Varun Pise, was riding a bike when he hit the senior citizen Dhanalal Bhuvani and then rammed into a divider, sustaining injuries. Bhuvani died on the spot, while Pise is recovering in a private hospital.

Officials have booked the youth under Sections 279 (rash driving) and 304 (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder). “We will arrest him after he gets discharged. He is being treated in the ICU now,” said an official under the condition of anonymity.

Pise is a student, while Bhuvani was an NRI from America who had arrived in the city 45 days ago to visit his relatives. His family, comprising his wife and son, live in America.

According to the preliminary investigation, sources from the police said that Pise was overspeeding on his bike and lost control of his bike and hit Bhuvani who was crossing the road near Gorai signal, before ramming into the divider. Bhuvani and Pise who was thrown off the bike were rushed to a nearby hospital where the senior citizen was pronounced dead. The police was informed about the incident later.
