Two months after a tyre burst brought Monorail services to a grinding halt for over six hours, aluminium trays supporting electric cables came off at an under-construction site of the Monorail phase II on Saturday.

The incident occurred in the afternoon just before the Mint Colony Monorail station near Currey Road. Apparently, trial runs of the Monorail had just been carried out before the occurrence.

U.P.S. Madan, metropolitan commissioner, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), said, “It was noticed that aluminium trays supporting electric cables came loose and it is yet to be found out as to what was the reason behind this.”

Meanwhile, traffic on N.M. Joshi Marg was diverted while MMRDA officials , the fire brigade and BMC reached the spot to rectify the error. Fortunately, there were no casualties due as the trays only came off but did not fall.

When contacted, Dilip Kawathkar, spokesperson, MMRDA, said, “The conductor rail that will provide power to the second phase will be tightened to the guideway beam by midnight. The incident will be investigated as soon as possible”.

Monorail phase II between Wadala and Jacob Circle will be commissioned in early 2017 while phase I between Chembur and Wadala was commissioned in 2014. Since awarding the project to Larsen & Toubro and Scomi Engineering of Malaysia in 2008, MMRDA has witnessed many ups and downs like rolling stock creating technical issues, and the Comptroller and Auditor General of India coming down heavily on MMRDA for irregularities in carrying out work as well as frequent tyre bursts and tyre falls.
