At a time when the Bombay high court has held that it is the statutory obligation of BMC to maintain all roads in the city, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) continue to collect toll at Bandra-Worli sea link and Mumbai’s five entry-exit points.

Radhesham Mopalawar, MD and Vvice chairman, MSRDC, said, “MSRDC only constructs flyovers in Mumbai. So far, 32 flyovers have been constructed by MSRDC in Mumbai. Generally, we hand over some flyovers to MMRDA because they help us financially in constructing flyovers. Some flyovers however are maintained by MSRDC itself.”

Mr Mopalawar explained that MSRDC collected toll at entry points of the city to maintain these bridges. He added that MSRDC was not concerned whether MMRDA maintained the flyovers or gave them to the civic body once they were handed over to MMRDA.

Dilip Kawatkar, spokesperson for MMRDA, said. “We construct roads and flyovers in Mumbai and after completion, we hand them over to BMC”. He further said that it was a BMC rule that MMRDA was supposed to handover roads and flyovers after their construction was over.
