Kicking off its plan to decongest Kalanagar junction, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) on Tuesday issued work orders for the construction of two flyovers and a road as part of the first phase of the plan. MMRDA has planned a total of four flyovers and a road at Dharavi to decongest the junction.

U.P.S. Madan, metropolitan commissioner, MMRDA, said, “In the first phase, there will be two flyovers — one from BKC to Bandra-Worli Sealink and the other from the sealink to BKC — to be constructed in such a way that these would be supported by a stilt road, on government land, that will run from Dharavi towards the sea-link. The two other flyovers, one from BKC to Western Express Highway (WEH) and the other from Dharavi to WEH, will be implemented in the second phase.”

In the first phase, the total length of the two two-lane flyovers will be 1,888 m and the overall project will have four flyovers with an extension of one of the bridges and the creation of a new road at an estimated cost of '227 crore. Other components of the project will be implemented in phase II of the plan.

MMRDA has received six tenders, from Supreme Infrastructure, J Kumar, JMC, NCC, Simplex Infrastructure and Relcon. MMRDA had floated the tenders in December last year. In a statement on Tuesday, the development authority said, “The executive committee of MMRDA has taken into consideration the plight of people visiting the latest business hub, Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), while according administrative approval to the appointment of M/s. Simplex Infrastructure Ltd. to construct two flyovers and a road.”
