Mhada seeks to build 10,000 homes

The Maharashtra Housing and Development Authority (Mhada) in its financial budget for 2016-17 aims to construct 10,000 affordable homes in the Mumbai and Konkan regions.

Also, Rs 3,900 crore — out the total budget of Rs 6,508 crore — has been allocated for the constructing affordable housing under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) and under the land available with Mhada.

In the past, Mhada had stressed on constructing, under its lottery system for Mumbai, Konkan, Nashik, Pune, Nagpur and Aurangabad, only on land parcels available with the latter and allocated by the state government. However, this year, Mhada received around 78 proposals from various municipal corporations and zilla parishads of the state including Pune, Nashik, Nagpur, Nanded and Aurangabad municipal corporations and Mhada’s Konkan Board, asking it to fund construction of homes under the PMAY model. The high-power committee headed by the chief secretary will now clear 51 proposals under which Mhada will construct affordable homes under the PMAY scheme.

The Centre has also announced that a sum of Rs 90 crore would be granted for constructing 1.09 lakh homes under the PMAY in the state.

Further, the budget allocates Rs 258 crore for acquisition of land across the state for constructing affordable homes. Subsequently, the Konkan Board of Mhada is in the process of acquiring 23 land parcels in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

The land parcels will be used for constructing homes for the lottery carried out by Konkan region of Mhada.

The budget further allocated around Rs 50 crore for constructing homes under the Rajiv Gandhi Gramin Niwara Yojana (RGGY)and Rs 25 crore for constructing homes under the Prime Minister’s Grant Programme (PMGP).

The budget proposes expenses of around Rs 5,420 crore out of the Rs 6,508 crore, which will be termed ‘surplus budget’.
