Admissions to private medical and dental colleges in the state based on the NEET-I and II scores may just have got delayed by a couple of days as the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) has sought legal opinion on the possibility of including deemed universities under the Centralised Admission Process (CAP), which was supposed to start by August 22.

According to sources in the DMER, following the Supreme Court order, admissions to all private medical and dental colleges based on NEET scores was supposed to be started on August 22. However, with deemed universities not being covered under CAP, the regulatory body had decided to delay the admission process till there was clarity about the same.

Dr P. Shingare, director of DMER, confirmed there were some concerns regarding the inclusion of deemed universities in the CAP and the same was discussed in a meeting on Thursday.

“We have decided to refer the issue to the law and judiciary department and seek their opinion whether deemed universities can be included in CAP.” He said, “Only after we receive their opinion will we start the admission process”.

Dr Shingare said that the DMER had all the required data of private medical and dental colleges and could start the admission process at a day’s notice.

Dr Shingare justified the delay, saying if deemed universities were included in CAP at a later stage, many students would suffer and new problems would be created. Hence as a precautionary measure the officials present in the meeting decided to delay the announcement of the dates for admission to private medical and dental colleges too.
