Man stabs stray dog’s eye, arrested

Police sources said the accused has been identified as Swami Mutthu, a local resident and a contract labourer who was working under a contractor for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
The incident occurred on Friday when at around 11 am, Mutthu, who sweeps the road and clears the drainage, was sweeping the road near the public toilet of Abhilash Nagar.
Suddenly, on noticing a stray dog sitting on the other side of the road, he went over and stabbed the right eye of the dog with the stick that he was carrying. The police said the reason behind Mutthu’s action is not yet known and they are probing the incident. After being poked in the eye, the dog started crying out in pain, which was heard by a local resident, who nabbed Mutthu, sources said. The local resident also informed the police about the incident.
The Kandivali police arrested Mutthu, and the dog was sent for treatment to a veterinary clinic in Malad area.
According to police sources, the dog is still under treatment but has lost vision in his right eye, as the wound is very deep.
A case was registered against the accused and he was produced in a local court on Saturday.
The court remanded Mutthu in judicial custody. The police has booked the accused under Section 429 (Mischief by killing or maiming cattle, etc., of any value or any animal of the value of Rs 50) of the Indian Penal Code along with section 11–A of The Prevention of Cruelty To Animals Act, 1960 (beats, kicks, over-rides, over-drives, over-loads, tortures or otherwise treats any animal so as to subject it to unnecessary pain or suffering or causes or, being the owner permits, any animal to be so treated).
