The state government’s initiative to consider allowing weekly vegetable markets at Marine Drive and Worli Sea face, has met with opposition from residents of these areas, who fear that beautiful tourist spots might become crowded stops of buyers. The state asked the BMC to consider allowing street vendors to start weekly markets on the footpaths opposite these two promenades, and sources in the BMC confirmed that the Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta had given negative remarks about this concept.

Meanwhile, Sonia Mistry, a resident of Girgaum, said, “It is definitely not a good idea, as it will draw crowds, and spoil the area. Even if there is a provision to clean up after the market has closed in the evening, there is no guarantee that it will be done. Who will maintain cleanliness ”

Yet another resident of Marine Lines, Abhishek Mutha, said, “Look at the state of other markets, like the Dadar and Crawford market. This one may not be as crowded, but it will spoil the calm of this area. Senior citizens take walks here, and it is more like an evening siesta spot.”

Residents have mainly expressed concerns regarding the cleanliness of the area. Sumedha Bhat, who lives in Girgaum, said, “This area has isolated vendors, so one consolidated market will make things easier, but it is not needed in a place like this. The nature of this street is different.”
