The suburban Khar police station will summon Sunjay Kapur, industrialist and estranged husband of Bollywood actor, Karisma Kapoor, following a case of dowry harassment filed against him by the latter. The estranged couple is fighting for divorce and custody of their children, Samaira and Kiaan. An officer from Khar police station said that there will be no arrest before completion of inquiry.
A senior official said that Karisma had filed a case of dowry harassment against Sunjay and based on her statement, police on Friday registered a FIR under dowry section 498A (husband or relative of husband subjecting the woman to cruelty) and section 34 (common intention) of the IPC. “We will question Sunjay and his mother in this regard next week,” said the senior official.
Karisma and Sunjay separated more than five years ago. The couple initially filed for divorce on grounds of mutual consent. However, Karisma later withdrew her consent from the petition in November last year, claiming that Sunjay was unable to meet the financial commitment.
Thereafter, the couple filed a fresh divorce application. The case is currently pending in the Bandra family court.
According to the senior official, Karisma, who is fighting a divorce case with her estranged husband, has now registered a harassment case against her in-laws. Earlier this week, Karisma’s lawyer approached the police on behalf of the actress to submit an application. In the application, the actress alleged mental torture. According to police sources from Khar police station, the allegations pertain to the period between 2012 and 2013, when Karisma was staying with her mother-in-law, Rani Surinder Kapur, and Sunjay in Khar area. In her complaint, Karisma has also stated that Sunjay started living with another woman as well.
